  • Me-bay?

So I need to find an extra source of income.  And I've been playing with the idea of killing to birds with one stone - clearing out my basement "junk" and selling it on ebay.  Now, I've been a loyal ebay buyer for years - but other than a quick attempt to unload my former engagement ring after the divorce (which, resulted in identifying several fraudulent "buyers" and tainting me a bit in the process), I've yet to jump into that end of things.

So I'm looking for input.  Have you sold things on ebay?  Often?  Easy?  Thoughts?  Etc?  Feedback, that's what I'm looking for.

Ebay has so many "brand new" items - which are not the kind of things I would be selling.  I have used, in VERY good condition items, but still....I think I hesitate for that reason. Tell me what you think....

ALSO - Thanks to all for the input on my last purgy email.  It helps.  I think I know deep down what needs to be done, I guess I really just don't want to admit it up on the surface yet.   So, true to my personality, I'll just ignore it a bit longer.  LOL.

  • Ahh.... eBay. I had great experience buying but as for selling. It was really weird. I don't know if it was just me, but I can across a lot of scams and buyers that couldn't pay. I ended up taking my things to a consignement shop. Although, a while back, another xangan need some extra income and listed her items on eBay and mentioned it all over her xanga and she was actually able to sell a lot of her stuff to real buyers. :)

  • If you are concerned about your "Ebay reputation", I think there are business out there which actually sell Items on Ebay for you, but take a share of the profits. I don't know how much that helps you, but you might want to look into it...

  • well ... I'm a little wary of selling on eBay for reasons similar to yours.  I did manage to successfully sell some fine china through CraigsList.org, but even then I'd been burned a time or two on other things.  Here's thought that might work out for you as regards your engagement ring: try Sotheby's or Christie's ... they're very reputable auction houses, and in the case of Sotheby's they'll evaluate your item, and sell it for you if they can get at least $5000 USD for it.  I attempted to sell a couple of things through them, but the perceived value wasn't there so they wouldn't handle it.  They did, however, make some recommendations of auction houses in my area.

I think eBay is great for light-weight (lower value) stuff, but I'd hesitate to sell the ring just because everything is so anonymous.  Good luck, whatever way you decide to go!

  • Hi, just a new reader here but I do have to put my 2 cents in about Ebay.  I was leary of it at one time too but over the last year I've sold alot on there and haven't really had any bad experiences.  I always check out the people that are bidding but so far no bad apples.  Prior to my moving I sold most of my unwanted stuff and made some good money.  My suggestion would be to start out small.  Maybe just start with one or two things until you get the feel for it.  Any more then that and you'll feel overwhelmed.

Another option would be to take it to a store where they list the Ebay item for you (for a certain percentage of course).  I'm not sure if you have anything like that in your area.  I know I've seen a couple in my area so they are around.

  • I have had great expereinces with Ebay, and only one negative one where the person didn't pay.  However with the way that they have raised Ebay fees in the last year, I would think that you need your item sell for at least $20 just to make it worth selling.  This comment was made with the idea that I have no idea what you are trying to sell.  A lot of Ebay success is the presentation of the item description.  If you go the Ebay route, I would look at similliar items that have already sold, then find the ones that sold for the most, and copy their item listing.

  • <tt><tt>Try this site - ExBoyfriendJewelry.com I read about it in a magazine last night - they only let you post jewelry and engagement ring/wedding rings from Exes.<tt>Their logo - You don't want it anymore, and he can't have it back!
